Why buy the Aqara H1 Smart Wall Switch in Singapore

• It fits the boxes we actually have. Aqara states the H1 supports square 86 mm wall boxes — the Singapore standard. The round-box EU version of the H1 is a different product and is not what is sold here.
• There is a no-neutral version. Most Singapore switch boxes have no neutral wire. Aqara makes the H1 in single, double and triple rocker without neutral, so a smart switch is possible in rooms where rewiring is not.

Neutral or no neutral — the choice that matters most

This is the decision to get right before anything else, and the two versions are not equivalent. Aqara gives the with-neutral version three things the no-neutral version does not have: a router (repeater) function that strengthens your Zigbee mesh automatically, overload protection on top of the overheat protection both versions carry, and power monitoring with consumption reports and statistics. Aqara also notes that not all LED-indicator behaviour options are available on the no-neutral version.

The no-neutral version exists because most Singapore switch boxes were never wired with a neutral. It trickles a small current through the lamp to keep itself powered, which is why very low-wattage LED fittings can flicker or glow faintly on any no-neutral switch, and why the with-neutral version is always the better switch when the wire is there. One, two or three gangs

Count the rockers on the plate you are replacing, not the lights in the room — one gang per switched circuit. A single rocker suits a bedroom or a bathroom light; two covers the usual living-room pair; three handles a hall plate driving several zones. Each gang appears in Aqara Home as its own switch, so a three-gang plate gives you three independently controllable, independently schedulable circuits from one box.

White or grey

The H1 panel comes in two finishes and they are the same switch inside — identical wiring, identical features, identical warranty. White is available in every combination, one to three gangs, neutral and no neutral. Grey is stocked in one and two gangs only, in both wiring types, at the same prices as white; there is no three-gang grey. The grey panel is a soft dark grey with the same brushed metal frame, and it is the easier match for a dark feature wall, a charcoal skirting line or a kitchen with dark cabinetry, where a white plate tends to jump out. If you are mixing the two in one flat, put grey where the wall is dark and white everywhere else — a three-gang hall plate will have to be white.

What it does that an ordinary switch cannot

Convert to wireless switch. Aqara lets you remap the rocker so the relay stays closed and the button becomes a free scene control — the light is then driven by an automation, and the button can run a curtain, a fan or a scene instead. This is the setting that keeps smart bulbs powered so they never drop off the network.

Two-way without new cable. Aqara’s own answer to a two-way circuit is to fit the H1 at the main position and stick a battery Wireless Switch H1 where the second switch was — over the old box or on any flat surface with the supplied adhesive. No chasing walls for a traveller wire.

Automations. Aqara’s published examples are the ones Singapore homes actually use: turn on the bathroom exhaust when a humidity sensor reads 80% or the toilet lid opens, and turn on the bedroom lights when a motion sensor triggers. Power-off memory decides whether a circuit comes back on after an outage, and the LED indicator can be turned off at night or set to follow the switch state.

Hub and ecosystems

The H1 is a Zigbee 3.0 device and Aqara requires a compatible Zigbee 3.0 Aqara hub — the Smart Hub M100, Hub M2, Hub M3 or a compact Hub E1. Through the hub, Aqara lists Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Because the with-neutral version is a Zigbee router, each one you fit also extends the mesh for battery sensors nearby, which is a real argument for choosing it wherever a neutral exists.

Installing the H1 Smart Wall Switch in a Singapore home

Wiring

This is a mains-wired switch and the power must be off at the consumer unit before the old plate comes off. Have a licensed electrician do the swap and confirm what is in the box — in particular whether a neutral is present, which decides the version you need. If a position turns out to have no neutral and you want the full feature set anyway, the alternative is to leave the existing switch in place and hide an Aqara Switch Module T1 or Dual Relay Module T2 behind it. For a water heater or another high-load appliance, the H1 wall switch is the wrong tool — use the Smart 20A Switch H1.

Pairing

Add your hub in the Aqara Home app first, then add the switch from the app with the circuit powered. If pairing fails, move the hub closer and try again. Once paired, each gang shows up as its own switch and can be renamed, scheduled, grouped and used as an automation trigger.
