Why buy the Aqara M2 Hub in Singapore

  • Three hub roles in one device. Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub (bridges up to 128 Aqara Zigbee accessories), 360° infrared remote (for AC, TV, fan, and other IR appliances), and Wi-Fi / Ethernet gateway (for app + voice-assistant connectivity).
  • Apple HomeKit bridge for your Aqara Zigbee accessories. Connect Aqara door / window sensors, motion sensors, smart plugs, switches, and locks — they appear in Apple Home and respond to Siri. Full HomeKit native bridge with all four alarm modes supported.
  • Built-in 360° IR control for AC, TV, fan, and more. Replace multiple remotes with the Aqara Home app and Google / Alexa voice automations. Pre-built IR code library covers most common Singapore AC, TV, and fan brands.
  • Built-in speaker. Use as a security alarm, doorbell chime, or alarm clock — fully configurable through Aqara automations.
  • Dual Wi-Fi antenna (2×2 MIMO). Stable wireless link to your home Wi-Fi even when dozens of Aqara sensors and controllers are connected.
  • Local automations work offline. Door-sensor and motion-triggered scenes keep running on the hub itself, even if your ISP drops out.
  • Optional battery backup via USB power bank. Plug the M2 into a USB-A pass-through power bank for uninterrupted operation during power cuts.

Aqara Zigbee 3.0 bridge — up to 128 child devices

The M2 hosts a full Aqara Zigbee 3.0 mesh. Connect up to 128 Aqara Zigbee accessories — door / window sensors, motion sensors, temperature / humidity sensors, water-leak sensors, smart plugs, wall switches, smart locks, smart curtain controllers, vibration sensors, and more. At higher device counts (typically beyond 32 directly connected end devices), add Aqara repeater devices such as the Smart Plug or Wall Switch with Neutral — they extend the mesh and improve responsiveness.

Note: the M2 supports Aqara Zigbee accessories only — third-party Zigbee devices are not supported.

Built-in 360° IR remote — replace your AC, TV, and fan remotes

The M2’s 360° IR transmitter lets you control any IR-driven appliance from anywhere in the same room — air-conditioners, TVs, ceiling and standing fans, set-top boxes, and more. Build automations: “set the bedroom AC to 24°C when the door sensor closes after 10 pm”, “switch off the TV when no motion is detected for 30 minutes”, “turn on the living-room fan from your phone before you walk in”.

The M2 uses Aqara’s pre-built IR code library — most common Singapore AC brands (Mitsubishi, Daikin, Panasonic, Sharp, LG, Samsung, Midea, Hitachi), TV brands (Samsung, LG, Sony, Sharp, TCL), and fan brands (KDK, Crestar, Mistral, EuropAce) are covered out of the box. For older or less common remotes that need to be “learned” from the original remote, the Hub M200 and M3 provide an IR-learn function — the M2 does not.

Apple HomeKit bridge + Google Home + Alexa

The M2 exposes its connected Aqara Zigbee accessories to four ecosystems:

  • Aqara Home — native, full feature set, local automations.
  • Apple HomeKit — native HomeKit bridge. Aqara Zigbee accessories (sensors, plugs, switches, locks) appear in the Apple Home app and respond to Siri. All four HomeKit-native alarm modes (Stay, Away, Night, Off) are supported.
  • Google Home + Google Assistant — cloud integration via your Aqara Home account.
  • Amazon Alexa — cloud integration via your Aqara Home account.

One M2-specific limitation worth knowing. The M2’s 360° IR controller is not exposed to Apple Home. That means: your Aqara Zigbee sensors / locks / plugs work in Siri, but your IR-controlled air-conditioner does not — for AC voice control on M2 you use Aqara Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa. If you specifically need Siri to control your AC (via Matter Air Conditioner Mode), choose the Aqara Hub M200 ($149) or Aqara M3 Hub ($289).

Built-in speaker — alarm, doorbell, or alarm clock

The M2 includes a built-in speaker, configurable through Aqara automations. Common Singapore use cases:

  • Doorbell chime. Pair an Aqara Wireless Mini Switch at your gate or door — pressing it triggers the M2 speaker.
  • Security alarm. Pair Aqara motion or door sensors — trigger a siren when the sensor fires after the household leaves for work.
  • Alarm clock. Schedule a wake-up sound; pair with a curtain-controller automation that opens the blinds at the same moment.
  • Notification chime. Notify when the laundry-room water-leak sensor fires, when the front-door sensor opens after midnight, or when the helper arrives home.

Local automations + dual Wi-Fi antenna

Most M2 automations run locally on the hub itself — they do not depend on the internet. Door-sensor triggers, motion-triggered scenes, leak-sensor alarms, scheduled switches, and IR-driven AC routines all keep working if your Singtel, StarHub, or M1 broadband drops temporarily. Voice control via Google / Alexa and remote app access from outside your home network do require internet (and resume automatically when it returns).

The dual Wi-Fi antenna (2×2 MIMO) keeps the connection stable when dozens of Aqara accessories are on the mesh. For households on routers with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz on the same SSID, the M2 automatically selects the 2.4 GHz band.

What the M2 doesn’t do — and when to choose M200 or M3

The M2 is an entry-tier hub. There are real capabilities it does not have — worth knowing before you buy, so you choose the right hub the first time.

  • No Thread radio. The M2 cannot host Aqara’s Thread-based accessories (the U200 / U300 / U400 / U500 smart locks all use Thread). For Thread Border Router capability, choose M200 or M3.
  • No Matter Controller. The M2 only supports Aqara Zigbee accessories on its own mesh — it does not act as a Matter Controller for Matter-spec devices. M200 and M3 are full Matter Controllers.
  • No PoE power. The M2’s RJ45 port is data-only — power must come through Micro-USB. M200 and M3 both support PoE for clean structured-cabling installs.
  • Apple Home AC voice not supported. M2’s IR controller is not exposed to Apple Home, so Siri cannot drive your air-conditioner. M200 and M3 expose AC as a Matter thermostat to Apple Home, Google, and SmartThings.
  • No IR learn / no IR status sync. M2 can emit IR signals from Aqara’s pre-built library; it cannot learn signals from your physical remote, nor receive IR signals back to mirror state into the app. M200 and M3 do both.
  • No Bluetooth child devices. The M2 has a BLE 5.0 radio for setup only — it does not support Aqara Bluetooth accessories like the Voice Mate H1. M200 and M3 do.

If any of the above matter for your setup — for example you already own an Aqara U-series smart lock, you want Siri AC control, or your structured wiring runs PoE — the right choice is the Hub M200 at $149 or the Hub M3 at $289. If you are setting up Aqara for the first time on a Zigbee-only sensor + plug + switch starter set, the M2 at $99 is the value pick.

Installation and placement in Singapore homes

The M2 is a self-install hub — no professional installer required.

  • Where to place it. Centre of the home for best Zigbee mesh coverage. Avoid placing it inside a closed cabinet or near metal surfaces. For IR control, the M2 needs line-of-sight to the appliances it controls — in HDB / condo flats this typically means one M2 per room or per zone where IR-controlled appliances live.
  • Power. Plug the supplied Micro-USB cable into any standard 5V / 1A or 5V / 2A USB charger you already own (smartphone / tablet charger). The M2 draws under 2 watts.
  • Wi-Fi. The M2 joins your home 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi during the Aqara Home app setup. If you prefer wired, use the RJ45 port for Ethernet — data only, no power over Ethernet.
  • Setup time. Roughly 5–10 minutes for the hub itself; each child Aqara Zigbee accessory then pairs in under a minute.
  • HDB / condo notes. Singapore HDB and condo flats are typically 65–110 m² — the M2 covers a typical 3-room to 5-room HDB layout when placed centrally. For larger landed homes, add Aqara repeater devices to extend the mesh.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Aqara M2 Hub support Matter or Thread?

The M2 is built around Zigbee 3.0 and infrared — it is not a Matter Controller and has no Thread radio. If you need Matter / Thread Border Router capability at the hub level, choose the Aqara Hub M200 ($149) or the Aqara M3 Hub ($289). The M2 is the right entry choice for households running Zigbee-only Aqara accessories.

Will the M2 work with Apple Home in Singapore?

Yes — the M2 acts as a HomeKit bridge for all connected Aqara Zigbee accessories (sensors, plugs, switches, locks, etc.), so they appear in your Apple Home app and respond to Siri. Important caveat: the M2’s 360° IR controller is not exposed to Apple Home. That means voice control for IR-driven appliances (air-conditioners, TVs, fans) works through the Aqara Home app, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa — not Siri. If Siri-driven AC voice control matters to you, the Hub M200 or M3 (which expose AC as a Matter thermostat) is the right pick.

How many Zigbee devices can the M2 connect?

Up to 128 Aqara Zigbee child devices. At higher device counts, Aqara recommends adding repeater devices such as Aqara Smart Plugs or Aqara Wall Switches with Neutral, which extend the mesh. Note: the M2 only supports Aqara Zigbee devices — third-party Zigbee accessories are not supported.

Does the M2 need a separate Wi-Fi network?

No. The M2 connects to standard 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) or wired Ethernet via the RJ45 port. Note: the M2 only joins the 2.4 GHz band — if your Singtel, StarHub, or M1 router broadcasts 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz on the same SSID, the M2 picks the 2.4 GHz channel automatically. The RJ45 port is data-only (no Power over Ethernet); power comes through the Micro-USB port.

Can the M2 control my Singapore air-conditioner by voice?

Yes via Aqara Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa. No via Siri / Apple Home — the M2’s IR controller is not bridged to Apple Home (this is M2-specific; Hub M200 and M3 do expose AC as a Matter thermostat to Apple Home, Google, and SmartThings).

Does the M2 come with a Singapore power adapter?

No. The box contains the M2 hub, a Micro-USB cable, and the user manual — no power adapter. PassionHome does not bundle power adapters on any Aqara product. Use any standard 5V / 1A or 5V / 2A USB-A wall charger you already have (smartphone or tablet charger). The M2 draws under 2 watts in normal operation.

Will the M2 learn my existing IR remote codes?

No — the M2 uses Aqara’s pre-built IR code library (no IR-learn function on M2). Most common Singapore AC, TV, and fan brands are already covered. If you have an older or less common remote, the M200 and M3 support an IR-learn function that records signals from any physical remote.

Can the M2 work when the internet drops?

Yes for local automations between connected Aqara Zigbee accessories — those run on the hub itself and continue working during ISP outages. Features that depend on the cloud (voice control via Google / Alexa, remote access from outside your home network) will resume when the internet returns. For Singapore households on shared Wi-Fi with occasional drops, the M2’s local automations keep door sensors, motion-triggered lights, and water-leak alarms running uninterrupted.

Is the M2 covered by warranty in Singapore?

Yes — the M2 carries the official 24-month Aqara manufacturer warranty, serviced at the Aqara Service Center in Singapore. No overseas RMA needed. PassionHome.sg is listed on Aqara’s official Authorised Dealer network. WhatsApp +65 9051 7063 if you need help with a warranty claim.

Should I buy the M2 — or upgrade to the M200 or M3?

The M2 ($99) suits new Aqara users running Zigbee-only setups who do not need Matter / Thread, Apple Home AC voice control, PoE power, or IR learning. The Hub M200 ($149) adds Matter Controller + Thread Border Router + PoE + dual-band Wi-Fi 6 + IR learning + Apple Home AC voice control. The M3 ($289) is the flagship — everything in the M200 plus eMMC local storage and the security-device classification (used by some Aqara locks). Stick with the M2 if you are building an entry-level Aqara setup; upgrade to M200 / M3 when you add Matter / Thread accessories or a smart lock.
