Why buy the Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 in Singapore

• Matter over Thread, hub optional. If you already own a Thread border router — an Apple HomePod, or an Aqara Hub M3 or M200 — the P2 pairs straight into your Matter ecosystem. No Aqara hub is required.

Thread and Matter: what you need

The P2 is a Thread end device — it talks Thread and Bluetooth 5.0 (for setup), not Zigbee. That means it needs a Thread border router on your network and a Matter controller in whichever app you use. In practice: an Apple HomePod for Apple Home; the Aqara Hub M3 or Hub M200 for Aqara Home (and, through Matter, the other platforms); a Thread-capable Google or Amazon device for those ecosystems. A plain Zigbee-only Aqara hub will not work — Aqara’s own troubleshooting lists hub does not support Thread as a pairing-failure cause.

If you have no border router and no plan to buy one, the Zigbee Motion Sensor P1 is the sibling to choose: it pairs to any Aqara hub, runs about five years on its battery, but only reports light level when it sees motion. The P2’s advantage is the always-updating lux channel and native Matter.

Motion and light, used together

The classic Singapore automation is a corridor or toilet light that turns on when someone walks in — and the classic complaint is that it also turns on at 2 pm when the room is already bright. Because the P2 reports lux independently every 30 seconds, you can write IF motion AND light below 50 lux THEN turn on the ceiling light, and IF no motion for 5 minutes THEN turn off. Aqara’s motion re-trigger interval is one minute, which is worth knowing when you tune the off-timer.

Where PIR fits — and where it does not

PIR sees heat moving across its field of view, so it is excellent for corridors, entrances, store rooms and toilets, and it will not fire while you sit still — which is exactly why a study or living room where people sit for long periods is better served by a millimetre-wave presence sensor such as the Presence Sensor FP1E or FP300. Height, angle and surfaces

Aqara recommends mounting at 1.2–2.0 m, or placing it on the edge of a shelf or cabinet, aimed across the space rather than straight at the door. Avoid metal surfaces (they interfere with the radio), avoid pointing it at aircon outlets or heat sources — hot and cold air moving across the field of view can cause false triggers — and do not rely on the adhesive on tiles, glass or marble, where Aqara says it will not hold. The holder in the box lets you angle the sensor after it is mounted.

Pets

There is no pet-immunity mode. Aqara’s guidance is to mount the sensor higher so that a cat or dog moving at floor level falls below the detection cone; check the detection diagram in the manual for the height that suits your pet.

Battery and reset

Two CR2450 cells give up to two years under Aqara’s conditions; the indicator turns from blue to red when they run low. To reset, hold the button for five seconds until the indicator flashes fast, then release.
