The detector uses the light-scattering principle: smoke particles entering the chamber scatter a light beam onto a photo sensor, and the denser the smoke, the stronger the signal, until the alarm trips. When it does, the red light flashes and the siren sounds at up to 85 dB — one chirp a second with a pause every three. A fault shows as three yellow flashes and three chirps every 48 seconds, and a low battery as one yellow flash and one chirp every 48 seconds, so you can tell the states apart without opening the app.

Add the detector to an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub and a smoke event becomes a push notification in Aqara Home. In Apple Home it supports Critical Alerts, which sound even when your iPhone is on silent or in a Focus mode — the behaviour you want from a fire alarm. In Aqara Home, the Automated alarm setting in each detector’s device settings lets you link the other smoke detectors in the house, so a kitchen alarm also sounds in the bedrooms — a linked alarm shows as a red flash every four seconds. Siren-equipped Aqara hubs sound through the Alert System, and because the Smart Gas Detector and Water Leak Sensor T1 sit on the same layer, one hub can be the audible alarm for fire, gas and water at once.

Aqara’s ten-year figure is based on testing at 25°C and 50–65% humidity, connected through an Aqara Hub M2 to Aqara Home, with one five-minute alarm every 30 days. Aqara notes that bridging through third-party hubs or platforms can keep the radio busier and shorten that, and that third-party battery gauges may read differently from the Aqara Home app. When the low-battery chirp starts, the CR17450 cell is replaced rather than the whole unit.

Where to mount it

Aqara’s installation notes are specific: indoor only, mounted horizontally (or tilted no more than 45°), at least 0.5 m from walls, beams and obstructions and at least 1.5 m from exhaust fans, air-conditioners and vents. Keep it out of the kitchen and bathroom, where cooking fumes and steam cause false alarms — a corridor outside the bedrooms or the living room ceiling is the usual spot in an HDB flat or condo. Screws are recommended; the adhesive sticker needs a clean, smooth, unpainted surface. It is rated for 0°C to 40°C and 0–95% RH non-condensing.

Silencing and testing

Press the silence/self-test button on the face of the detector, or tap Silence on the alarm page in the app. A fire alarm is silenced for about 80 seconds; a fault or low-battery alarm for about eight hours. Aqara lists cooking fumes, steam, condensation in humid weather, incense and mosquito coils, and aerosol sprays as the common causes of false alarms — all of which argue for keeping it out of the kitchen.

Which hub do I need?

An Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub is required for anything beyond the local alarm. The Smart Hub M100 is the value option, the Hub M3 adds a built-in siren, Matter and Thread, and the Hub E1 is a compact USB-powered stick.
