Between Neutral and No-Neutral which one should I get?

The answer is simple and yet not so straightforward. Technically all our homes do not usually have a neutral wire. There are some of us to who open up the light switch look at two different coloured wires and think that we have a neutral wire. But 99.99% of the time this is incorrect. The neutral wire is typically blue in colour and is often present in heater and aircon switches. We usually see a brown wire which is the live wire and a green/yellow wire which is the Earth wire that is connected to the metal bracket. So at this point, the no neutral wall switch would be the solution for our homes, right? Unfortunately, the long answer is a big NO!. Read on.

Without a neutral wire, the No-Neutral wall switch will always continue to send a small current to your light fixtures so that it can keep itself powered (its wifi receiver and modules) and continue to listen for your instructions from you or the Gateway. Unfortunately, this also means that the lights could be building up a charge from the small current. When the charge is sufficient enough the lights could flicker or blink which can be irritating and sometimes freaky if it happens after midnight.

In addition, the No-Neutral Aqara wall switches have had a lousy reliability track record and it is the reason why we have not brought in any more new stock for the No-Neutral.

So what should you get? We recommend the Aqara Neutral Version switches. With the neutral wire, the wall switch can be self-powered. The live and neutral wire allows the switch to have a closed circuit to power itself while sending zero current to the lights. This way you do not face any light flickering or blinking. It is a solid workhorse. It has a very low defect rate.

Having said this you will need to work with your licensed electrician to explore if he/she would be able to pull a neutral wire to your light switch for your home. If this is not possible our suggestion is to skip smart switches and get smart lights instead. Smart switches can only do ON/OFF, whereas smart lights can do brightness control, colour control and so much more.

How to choose	A neutral wire is required. Typically HDB houses only have live wires running at the switch. You will need to get the electrician to pull a neutral wire to the switch.	You only need to use live wires. Most likely this is the case for your home.

What is the difference between the no-neutral and neutral version switches?

Do you have switches with the triple gang?

No, we don’t, we currently have the single and double gang versions only. In fact, Aqara does not manufacture triple gang switch at the moment.

Is a gateway necessary to control from a smartphone?

Yes, it is if you would like to control it from your smartphone and it can double up as a normal switch too without a gateway.

What is the load range differences for no neutral and neutral version switches?

For the no neutral wire required version, the load range is no more 800W.

What are the dimensions of the part of the switch installed on the wall?

Can this be used to replace old switches which are set up as a two-way switch?

The short answer is Yes. But here is the long answer. The way two-way switches work is that there are switches on two sides of the hallway (e.g. Switch 1 and Switch 2). When you switch on the lights on Switch 1, the bulb turns on, and you go to the other end of the hallway to switch off the same bulb using Switch 2 the circuit is open, and lights go off. The issue here is that when you turn off the switch, you are breaking the circuit which means the current is no longer flowing through both the switches. As a result, the Aqara switch will not work, and thus all automation that depends on it will stop working as well.

So how do I make Aqara Wall Switch work if I currently have a two-way switch set up?

The solution is simple. You have to patch your wires at either Switch 1 or Switch two so that it is no longer a two-way switch set up. In the end state, there will be no more switch 2, and you can only control the lights using Switch 1. You can then replace Switch 1 with the Aqara Wall Switch. Now to still enjoy the two-way switch experience you will place a wireless switch to replace Switch 2. Now the wireless switch will automatically turn on/off your light bulb by turning on/off the Aqara Wall Switch. There is two wireless switch for your consideration 1. Xiaomi Wireless Switch which is small, round and cheap. You can do single press, double press and long press.
