Methane only: check your gas supply first
This is the single most important thing to know before buying. The Aqara Smart Gas Detector senses methane (CH4), which is what piped natural gas and town gas are mostly made of. If your home is on a piped gas supply, this is the right detector. If you cook on an LPG cylinder, this detector will not respond to a leak and you should not rely on it — message us on WhatsApp at +65 9051 7063 and we will point you to the right safety device instead. Loud local alarm, then your phone
The detector uses a semiconductor sensor that reacts to methane on its surface; the higher the concentration, the higher the electrical conductivity, and at 10% LEL (the default threshold) the built-in siren sounds at up to 85 dB while the LED flashes red once a second. After power-on it preheats for three minutes — the red, yellow and green lights cycle and it beeps three times — before normal monitoring begins, shown by a steady green light.
Paired with an Aqara hub, a leak also becomes a push notification in Aqara Home — with Apple Critical Alerts, which break through silent mode and Focus on an iPhone. The app keeps a real-time gas concentration reading and a history log, which is useful when you are trying to work out whether a reading was a real leak or a cooking-related false alarm.
Group binding and the Aqara Alert System
In a larger home you can bind several gas detectors so that when one triggers, the others sound too — and Aqara states this keeps working even if the hub goes down. Through the Alert System the leak also triggers every siren-equipped Aqara hub in the house, so a leak in the kitchen is heard from a Hub M3 in the living room or an M2 in a bedroom. If you already own the Water Leak Sensor T1 or a Smart Smoke Detector, they slot into the same alert layer.
Automations: turn on the fan, close the valve
With an Aqara hub the detector can drive automations — the obvious one is switching on the kitchen exhaust fan through a smart plug or switch module when a leak is detected. Aqara’s page also describes shutting the gas off with a smart valve; that needs a compatible valve controller, and Singapore gas installations are regulated, so treat automatic shut-off as something to discuss with your gas contractor rather than a DIY project.
Disarming the siren
You can silence the alarm by pressing the mute/self-check button on the detector, tapping Mute in the app, pressing a paired Wireless Mini Switch, or showing an OK hand gesture to a Camera Hub G3. Muting a leak alarm silences it for about ten minutes; muting a fault or end-of-life alarm silences it for about eight hours. Aqara lists cooking wine, air-freshener or insecticide sprays, excessive steam and heavy dust build-up as common causes of false alarms.
Installing the Smart Gas Detector in a Singapore kitchen
Placement rules from Aqara
Aqara’s installation notes put the detector on the wall or ceiling within 4 m horizontally of the hob or gas valve, but not directly above a burner, and at least 1.5 m from exhaust fans, air-conditioners and vents. It is indoor-only, must not be installed where the temperature falls below −10°C or rises above 55°C, and screws are the recommended fixing — the adhesive sticker only works on a clean, smooth, unpainted surface. A cable lead-out port on the side (wall mounting) or a hole in the centre of the plate (ceiling mounting) routes the adapter cable.
Power: plug-in, not battery
The detector runs on 12 V DC at 0.5 A (6 W) from the adapter supplied in the Aqara box, so it needs a power point within reach of the mounting position — usually the socket behind the hob or above the counter. Plan the cable route before you fix the plate. There is no battery backup: if the power point is switched off, the detector is off.
Which hub do I need?
Any Aqara Zigbee hub works: the Smart Hub M100 is the value pick for a first sensor, the Hub M3 is the flagship with Matter and Thread, and the Hub E1 is a plug-in USB stick if you only need a small Zigbee network. Aqara recommends keeping the detector within 20 m of the hub with no more than two walls in between — and since the detector itself is a repeater, it will extend reach to other sensors in the kitchen.

Does the Aqara Smart Gas Detector detect LPG?

Does it work without an Aqara hub?
