How the sensor detects water

The T1 uses the electrical conductivity of water. Two metal probes on the base form a current loop the instant water touches both of them, and Aqara states the alarm triggers at a water level of just 0.5 mm. The sensor reports the leak to the hub, which sounds its alarm, sends the notification and runs whatever automations you have attached.

The distributor rates the sensor IP67 with a UV-resistant shell and Aqara rates it for 0–100% RH, which matters in Singapore: the places you want to monitor — under the kitchen sink, beside the washing machine in the service yard, below the storage water heater — are exactly the humid, occasionally wet spots that kill ordinary electronics.

From alert to automatic shut-off

The most useful automation is the simplest: IF leak detected THEN close the valve. Aqara’s Valve Controller T1 mounts on the washing-machine or heater inlet valve, so a hose failure is stopped within seconds rather than running until someone gets home. On the same hub, the sensor can also switch off the water heater or turn on the lights so you can see what happened.

Through the hub, the sensor appears in Apple Home as a leak sensor, so Apple Home automations and notifications work alongside Aqara Home’s. The same alert layer carries the Smart Smoke Detector, Smart Gas Detector and Door and Window Sensor T1, which is why one Aqara hub tends to grow into a whole-flat safety system.

Where to put it

There is nothing to mount — Aqara’s instruction is simply to place it on the surface you want monitored, probes down. In a typical HDB or condo that means the cabinet floor under the kitchen sink, the floor beside the washing machine inlet in the service yard, under the storage heater in the bathroom, and near the aircon fan-coil drain tray if you have had condensate leaks before. Keep it off metal surfaces, which interfere with the Zigbee signal, and within reach of the hub — Aqara lists distance, battery and metal as the three causes of a sensor going offline.

Which hub do I need?

An Aqara hub is mandatory — the T1 cannot be used on its own. The Smart Hub M100 is the value pick with a built-in siren, the Hub M3 is the flagship with Matter and Thread, and the Hub E1 is a compact USB stick if you have no need for a siren. Battery and button

One CR2032 gives about two years of use and is user-replaceable. The single button sits under the water-drop icon in the centre of the shell, which is also where the Zigbee antenna is; press it by holding the top and bottom halves and pressing the icon.
